Background

Expekt.com (as they're keen to call themselves) were founded in 1999 by Christian Haupt and Conny Gesar. The first two languages available at their website were English and Swedish and it's in the Scandinavian region where this operator have always traditionally been strong, with a solid customer base established in Denmark and Norway. However, the past few years have seen them grow their customer base in central Europe.

Expekt were originally based in London, although in 2000, they made the switch to Malta, where they are licensed and where their headquarters are based. They now claim to have over 1.5 million customers worldwide, many of whom enjoy other products such as online casino and poker. It's worth noting that their plans for world domination are supported by the fact that they support languages such as Czech, Croatian, Hungarian, Greek, Turkish, Russian, Estonian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Thai and Indonesian. Refreshes the parts that many other bookmakers can't reach!

Odds & Markets

Their odds are solid rather than spectacular. It's very rare that you'll see Expekt take a position on the favourite, although they're fully aware of their need to be competitive when it comes to price-sensitive regions such as Scandinavia. You'll therefore have plenty of joy on the Premier League and Serie A, both of which are popular in Sweden. It's also worth checking out their Asian Handicap odds which are bet to tight margins and one of the best services in the industry.

Markets-wise, they are very upfront about how many are being offered and are particularly strong on football, ice hockey and tennis. Indeed, as far as the former is concerned, a wide variety of European leagues are covered, while they have been very quick to load up a stack of Euro 2008 bets ahead of the summer tournament.

One area for improvement is their In-Play betting, which should not be cordoned off from the other markets so much. It's easy to assume that they don't offer Live betting unless you rummage for it, and it's pretty basic when you do find the console area.

Website

The homepage is quite neat, with Expekt listing their available sporting markets down a centre column rather than the traditional left-hand menu. Nevertheless, they should be applauded for listing the markets available at any given time, rather than allow their customers to delve around searching for something that isn't there.

It's a shame that they feel the need to cross-sell their casino, poker and games products so vehemently on the sportsbook homepage. Indeed, the only rotating feature at the time of writing advertises a poker tournament. Nevertheless, they have some nice thumbnail features to promote the big sporting events on the horizon. It's also a nice touch to see a search box included for customers to search for a particular player or event.

Navigation around the website is an unusual experience. Once you have selected your sport and sub-category, you are whisked to that particular pocket of the sportsbook without any thought that you may want to back up and choose something else. The presentation of markets could be better, although it does provide a step-by-step guide as to how one places a bet.

Customer Service

Perhaps a little more emphasis could be placed on client support. Although offering it 24/7 in 20 different languages should of course be praised, the online form is no substitute for offering a couple of email addresses, while a telephone number surely isn't too much to ask for! It's clear that Expekt think they have the angles covered with their FAQ section, although it's actually quite limited in terms of the issues covered and will almost certainly leave customers scrambling to contact them. Nevertheless, they are very prompt when it comes to dealing with emailed queries.
