2008 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Denman has been retired after it was revealed he suffered an injury in his preparation for the Lexus Chase.

The superstar was set for a return to action over December 28th, but after a scan yesterday, trainer Paul Nicholls revealed that they had found a tiny damage to his near fore tendon.

Denman will be remembered for his sensational victory in the 2008 Cheltenham Gold Cup and his two remarkable weight-carrying performances in the Hennessy Gold Cup in 2007 and 2009.

After breaking the news Nicholls explained: “We are all devastated here at Ditcheat but Denman has given us some wonderful moments on the track, winning a Gold Cup, finishing runner-up in three more, as well two Hennessys, a Lexus and a Sun Alliance Chase.

“He will be given an honourable retirement. But for the immediate future and to help his great friend Kauto Star, he will be kept in his box next to Kauto for the rest of season.  Denman will always be a legend here at Ditcheat.

“So this truly is an end of an era.”
