Former Cheltenham Gold Cup hero Denman will head to Aintree next month as the multiple Grade One winner looks to build on his second behind Long Run at this month’s Festival.

Paul Nicholls’ legendary chaser finished runner-up in the Cheltenham Gold Cup for the second time after battling it out with Long Run and Kauto Star in a pulsating climax to this year’s big race.

There were plenty of punters left wondering where the superstar would go next but Nicholls explained: "Denman ran a mighty race, it's the third time he's been second in the Gold Cup and he probably ran the best race he has for some time.

"The plan is to go to Aintree with him now. He's only had two runs this season, we're very happy with him and we'd just like to see some rain before Aintree."

Meanwhile, stablemate Kauto Star will be heading to the Punchestown Festival for the Guinness Gold Cup with Nicholls continuing: "He had a hard race and ran an absolute blinder really, it certainly put all those who said he should retired right, and he's fresh and well.

"He ran a blinding race and the idea now is he goes to Punchestown. He's not going to Aintree so it should be ideal for him."
