Grand National runners - Deep Purple looking for birthday win

Deep Purple celebrates his 11th birthday today by running in the Grand National and there is sure to be plenty of support for Evan Williams's runner.

Horses are officially given January 1st as a birthday for ratings purposes but Grand National runner Deep Purple was foaled on April 14 2001, making him 11 years old today. The horse will celebrate by running at Aintree and it would be quite a story if he were to win.

Evan Williams's runner shares a name with the famous band, who sang Smoke on the Water, and that is not all. He also shares a birthday with guitarist Richie Blackmore, who is 66 today.

Deep Purple was a winner at Sandown on Tingle Creek day but he was a faller last time out at Kempton. He and his legions of fans will be hoping that he can make it round the Grand National course at Aintree this afternoon.
