Pricewise winners usually spell disaster for the bookmakers but totesport were more than happy with results on the second day of the Festival having ducked both First Lieutenant and What A Charm this morning.

It was a day for the Irish as trainers from the Emerald Isle saddled six of the seven winners, ironically missing out in the Champion Bumper in which they have such a good record.

“The defeats of hot favourites So Young and Time For Rupert were always going to be manna from heaven for the layers but we managed to dodge a bullet in the shape of What A Charm which leaves us in fine fettle heading into the third day,” said totesport spokesman George Primarolo.

One Irish punter will be celebrating long into the night having scooped £38,500 on just a £30 Super Yankee in the totesport betting shop at Cheltenham Racecourse. The punter backed Bostons Angel, Sizing Europe, What A Charm and Cheltenian in the bet and was only let down for an absolute fortune when For Non Stop fell at the last in the Coral Cup.

Sizing Europe is the 5/1 favourite with totesport to take back-to-back renewals of the Champion Chase having lowered the colours of both Big Zeb and Master Minded in this year’s race.

Ruby Walsh is still the odds-on favourite at 1/3 with totesport to take the top jockey crown despite not riding a winner on the second day of the Festival. Cheltenian’s victory in the Champion Bumper means Richard Johnson is the 6/1 second-favourite whilst Davy Russell is a 12/1 shot having ridden a double on the card courtesy of First Lieutentant and Carlito Brigante.

Looking ahead to later in the week, Alavain has been nibbled to 8/1 (from 9/1) for the County Hurdle after trainer Gordon Elliot saddled two horses to victory on the second day of the Festival in the shape of Chicago Grey and Carlito Brigante.
