Saturday’s race card at Newbury has been abandoned, much to the dismay of a number of trainers who were set to use the meeting to prepare for the 2012 Cheltenham Festival.

The high class card looked set to beat the weather earlier in the week and with frost covers down on the track for nearly fourteen days, Newbury staff were doing all they could to make sure the valuable meeting took place.

However, after 4cm of snow fell overnight officials were left with no choice and clerk of the course Richard Osgood explained:  "We've had to abandon.  There's snow on the covers and there is no predicted rise in temperatures or rain which would help shift it.

"There have been preliminary discussions about restaging the fixture and we are looking to hold it next week but at this stage I know nothing more than that."

With the likes of Sprinter Sacre, Long Run and Zarkandar all set to reappear at the meeting, Cheltenham Festival ante post punters will be disappointed that they won’t get chance to see the leading contenders before they make the trip to Prestbury Park.
