Irish jockey Ruby Walsh believes that Kauto Star will be fully fit and ready to do himself justice when he lines up in Saturday’s Betfair Chase at Haydock.
The rider will be hoping that Paul Nicholls’ legendary chaser can bounce back to form and prove he retains all of his ability after he was pulled up at Punchestown at the end of last season.
Kauto Star has won the Betfair Chase on three different occasions, but this year he will be faced with 2011 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Long Run and Walsh believes his mount could be in line for a tough task.
Kauto actually chased home Long Run in third at Prestbury Park and Walsh explained: "I'm looking forward to getting back on Kauto Star, a horse who has given me so many incredible moments.
"You'd have to say he's a big price as Long Run comes here as defending champion as this will be a stepping stone to the King George and Gold Cup.
"In contrast, every day now could be D-day for Kauto Star - I know Paul's worked him pretty hard so he definitely won't be lacking for fitness."
Also lining up in the race could be Diamond Harry, Weird Al and Time For Rupert in what looks to be a fascinating renewal of the Grade One.
