Owner Dai Walters has stressed that Oscar Whisky will only run in the John Smith's Aintree Hurdle on Saturday week if ground conditions allow it.
Nicky Henderson’s superstar was last seen finishing third behind Hurricane Fly and Peddlers Cross in the Champion Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival after he had previously landed the Welsh Champion Hurdle at Ffos Las.
Walters wants to run him at this year’s Grand National meeting, but will only let the six-year-old take his chance if conditions are in his favour.
"If we have a bit of rain then I think he'll go to Aintree, but we won't risk him if the ground is not right," Walters explained.
"It all depends on the weather, as we won't be leaving anything to chance. He ran a fantastic race at Cheltenham and that is why we won't be taking any risks as, with a bit of luck, he should have a very good future.
"He won't be going to Punchestown. If he doesn't go to Aintree he'll be going out into the field for the summer.
"If we did go to Aintree, he should run a good race, as we know he gets two and a half miles well."
Speaking about running Oscar Whisky over fences next week, Walters continued: "We're doing one thing at a time and we haven't made any decisions about next season. We can go whichever way we wanted with him now and we'll make a decision on next season closer to the time."
