2010 Cheltenham Festival tips

- 10 Mar 2010

Dunguib has looked awesome on all his racecourse starts and for many punters he's a banker bet in the Supreme Novices' Hurdle at Cheltenham.

Leading bookmaker William Hill are offering punters the chance to claim a free £25 bet on this year's Cheltenham Festival - simply sign up here using bonus code F25.

Since getting turned over by On Raglan Road on his debut at Punchestown in April 2008, Philip Fenton's seven-year-old hasn't looked back and his performance when running away with last season's champion bumper was probably the best ever in that sphere. Of course, it doesn't always follow that top bumper horses go on to make good hurdlers, but Dunguib's has made the transition with ease winning all four of his starts, and the way he travelled and quickened effortlessly on the bridle to beat some useful sorts at Leopardstown last time out had to be seen to be believed.

However, if you watch that race again (or any of his three previous hurdle starts for that matter), he clearly has a bit to learn in the jumping department and while he could probably afford to make a couple of mistakes at Cheltenham and still win, at just 5/6 with Sportingbet, I'd want to be more confident of his hurdling than that display entitles us to be. There's also a chance, albeit a very small one, that he could be switched to the Champion Hurdle, so I couldn't possibly recommend backing him at odds-on at this stage.

Fortunately, his short price leaves ample scope to grab some each-way value elsewhere and the one that takes the eye is DAN BREEN, who can be backed at a whopping 40/1 with William Hill. A winner of a couple of modest bumpers last summer, the David Pipe-trained five-year-old made an impressive debut over hurdles when slamming a couple of decent horses at Doncaster at the beginning of this month and, while the bare form of that race leaves him with a fair bit to find with the market leaders, he has the potential to bridge that gap.

If you don't jump and travel at speed, you don't win the Supreme and, judging by how quickly he brushed aside the runner-up Tanto Faz, himself no mug on the flat, Dan Breen clearly has more pace than the typical bumper winner, while his jumping was surprisingly slick for a horse making its hurdling debut. With doubts over several of those ahead of him in the betting, which I will come on to next, he is crying out to be backed at 40's (25/1 in places) as there is no way he will be that price on the day.

Impressive Totesport Trophy winner Get Me Out Of Here (10/1 Stan James) would have a massive chance if he were to line up in this race. However, connections have been unwilling to commit him just yet and he will no doubt be given an entry in the County Hurdle too. The bad gash he picked up during the race at Newbury may also impact on future plans, so I'd much rather wait until when bookmakers go non-runner-no-bet before steaming in.

I used to be a big fan of Menorah (12/1 Blue Square) so it was disappointing to see him get beat at Ascot on Saturday, a race he was expected to win, and that defeat is a knock for Bellvano (20/1 Totesport), whom he beat at Kempton over Christmas. Neither might be as good as I previously thought.

The latter was at one stage Nicky Henderson's number one hope for this race but that now looks to be Oscar Whisky (12/1 general). Winner of his sole start over hurdles to date, he could be anything, although the last horse to win this race after just one hurdle outing was Flown in 1992. His backers will be hoping Henderson can get another run into him for the sake of experience.

Similarly, Blackstairmountain (14/1 Ladbrokes) could do with some more practice after just one run over hurdles at Punchestown. Still, in winning by 16 lengths, he couldn't have been more impressive and the turn of foot he showed that day could be used to good effect on what is likely to be goodish ground at Cheltenham. His price has collapsed somewhat recently after being put up by Pricewise but he's still one very much to consider.
