Paul Nicholls will send Al Ferof to the Cheltenham Festival after his victory in the Bet On totepool on 0800 221 221 Novices' Hurdle at Newbury on Saturday.
The days racing was marred by the devastating scenes before the opening race at a sombre Newbury and after the death of two horses and the withdrawal of market leader Kid Cassidy, Al Ferof was sent off a ¼ shot.
Harry Skelton partnered the youngster to a fifteen-length victory and Nicholls explained: "We didn't learn any more about him from that but I was pleased. I'll have a chat to John Hales (owner) about targets."
Hales continued: "It's a dilemma as to whether we go two miles or two and a half at Cheltenham."
The bookies reacted by cutting Al Ferof’s odds for the Supreme Novices' Hurdle and the Neptune Investment Management Novices' Hurdle at Cheltenham.
