It looks likely that Saturday’s Scilly Isles Chase second Captain Chris will only take his chance in next month’s Arkle Trophy at Cheltenham if the ground comes up soft.
The superstar was narrowly denied by classy hurdling recruit Medermit in the weekend’s big race and he remains a highly talented prospect.
Trainer Philip Hobbs believes that it could be the Jewson Novices' Chase that proves to be Captain Chris’ Cheltenham target and the trainer explained: "I think it's going to have to be very soft to run Captain Chris in the Arkle but Richard Johnson probably disagrees as he feels he could be equally effective in either race. I'm leaning towards the two-and-a-half mile race with him.”
Hobbs also admitted that the ground would also be vital for another one of his talented chasers, Wishfull Thinking.
"If the ground was good then probably Wishfull Thinking goes for the RSA but if it's soft he runs in the Jewson," he commented.
