Alan King’s Medermit warmed up for the 2011 Cheltenham Festival in the perfect way with an awesome performance in the 1 totepool Challengers Novices' Chase at Sandown on Saturday.

The 5/2 shot managed to hold off the challenge of Captain Chris to win by half a length after a display of top class jumping from the classy hurdle recruit.

The superstar looks set to be aimed at the Arkle or Jewson Novices’ Chase at next month’s Festival and trainer King explained: "Choc (Thornton) said he got there too soon and he just idled. You've got to be able to get the trip for the Arkle and this was the ideal preparation, but I'm not committing him to anything at the moment.

"I don't want to say something and change my mind but I'm very happy - I haven't won a Grade One for about two years, after all."

Punters will be keen to hear where King plans to send Medermit but after his display on Saturday it is likely that he will look for more Grade One success in the Arkle Trophy on the opening day of the meeting.
