Plans to switch Cue Card to chasing may be put on hold as trainer Colin Tizzard weighs up the prospect of challenging Paul Nicholls’ Big Buck’s over the smaller obstacles this season.

Last year’s Champion Bumper winner was one of the top novice hurdlers in 2010/11 and he was sent off a warm favourite for last year’s Supreme Novices’ Hurdle.

It had originally been thought that he would now make the transition to fences but Tizzard explained:  “We might stay over hurdles.  He is only five.  Because he won the Champion Bumper when he was four, people though he was going to go chasing when he was five, but he might have another season over hurdles.  It hasn’t been decided.

“I felt from Christmas through to when he was roughed off last year he was growing, he definitely has a spurt and he’s now a big horse and whether that just took the edge off him I don’t know.”

He continued: “He ran a good race behind Menorah at Cheltenham and that was two miles – I wouldn’t mind betting that he will stay three and we could be looking to see how good that World Hurdle horse of Paul Nicholls’ is.”
