A winner of the ArkleTrophy last year, Tidal Bay sustained the cut in the Letheby & Christopher Chase at Cheltenham and it appears to be taking longer than expected to heal.
Trainer Howard Johnson admits that the eight-year-old is slightly tender and is worried that the horse will not be ready in time for the Cheltenham Festival. However, the County Durham handler insists he will give the horse every chance of making the Ryanair Chase on March 12.
"He's still a bit behind," said Johnson.
"He got cut at Cheltenham and it got infected. They bandaged it up down there and it was a good job I took the bandage off when he got back because some muck had got into it.
"He had to go to my vets on a drip and get it washed out and it has just taken a long time to come right.
"He's healed up now but it's still a bit tender. His fitness will be fine, it's just the cut that's the problem"
If Tidal Bay comes through the cut then punters who backed him at current odds of 7/1 from Sportingbet. Tidal Bay's serious competitors are Voy Por Ustedes at 6/4 from Ladbrokes and Our Vic at 8/1 from Ladbrokes.
