Scottish punter "Fearless" Freddie died aged 65 on June 21 last year after he suffered a heart attack at his home near Cumnock, Ayrshire.

A race at this year's Cheltenham Festival, is to be named in his honour and the winner of the Freddie Williams Festival Plate will take home an impressive £90,000.

Edward Gillespie, managing director of Cheltenham Festival, stated:

"Freddie was one of the people who helped define the festival in modern times."

"His friendly battle with JP McManus was the highlight of the betting ring action each year and he certainly earned his nickname "Fearless" by being prepared to back his own opinion against those of people with bulging pockets."

The Freddie Williams Festival Plate will be a highlight of the races on March 12. The race is looking very tight at this stage with no clear favourite. Victor Chandler has prices of 10/1 for Clarified and Northern Alliance, the two joint favourites. An outsider to watch has to be Don't Push It at 14/1 from William Hill
