Paul Nicholls' well-regarded Brampour could manage only third on his eagerly-awaited debut for the stable in the opener at Kempton on Saturday.
Fellow French-import Kazzene, trained by David Pipe and ridden by Tony McCoy, was a one-and-a-half length winner and can now be backed at 13.0 for the Triumph Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.
Brampour and Kazzene were left to fight it out when A Media Luz took a tumble after the second last, with the former in the lead going to final flight, but he weakened after landing while Kazzene stayed on strongly, with Kuilsriver sweeping through late from off the pace to claim second.
Brampour is now trading at 17.0 for the Triumph, with stablemate Sam Winner promoted to favourite at 10.0.
