Clive Smith believes that Ruby Walsh’s return to the saddle has come at the perfect time as Kauto Star bids to land a third totesport Cheltenham Gold Cup on Friday week.

The owner is confident that Walsh’s return to fitness could help his legendary chaser return to winning ways after he finished third behind Long Run and Riverside Theatre in the King George VI Chase at Kempton.

That result came after Kauto Star had registered yet another Grade One success at Down Royal and it was on that card that Walsh suffered his injury, ruling him out of the saddle for four months.

Smith believes that however good McCoy has been in the saddle on his horse, Walsh gets on with Kauto Star better than anyone and he is returning to the game at the perfect time.

"We feel that it will be different with Ruby (Walsh) back and the two know each other so well we will have a much more favourable result," Smith explained.

"As good as Tony McCoy is, he has a different style of riding and I'm very pleased that Ruby is able to get back on Kauto again.

"It would be incredible if he could regain the Gold Cup for a second time.  I think he's got a great chance."
