2014 Champion Hurdle tips - Willie Mullins happy to rely on just Hurricane Fly

Willie Mullins will be relying on just Hurricane Fly in the 2014 Stan James Champion Hurdle as Annie Power, Un De Sceaux and Thousand Stars failed to be declared in a field of nine for Tuesday's Cheltenham Festival feature.

The 10-year-old will be seeking to win this race for the third time after prevailing in 2011 and 2013 and is also chasing a 20th Grade One success on the opening afternoon of this year's four-day spectacular at Prestbury Park.

The son of Montjeu has been in grand form again this term, claiming the Morgiana Hurdle at Punchestown before obliging in the Ryanair Hurdle and the Irish Champion Hurdle at Leopardstown, beating three of his Cheltenham rivals in each of the last two events.

Mullins said: "He has had to work hard in a few races this year but I think he's still improving. He just looked so good when he came in from summer's grass this autumn and it really is a pleasant surprise for a horse his age to improve. He still retains his fight and his aggressiveness and they are the qualities that probably make him stand out from other horses."

Ruby Walsh has also warned the pretenders to Hurricane Fly's throne that he can ride the horse better than he has in previous visits to the Festival, with the jockey blaming himself for some tactical errors.

He declared: "I don't think I've done things right on him at Cheltenham. The day I'll get it right, he'll show England what he's shown Ireland."

The opposition will be stronger this season, though, with The New One vying for favouritism after winning last year's Neptune Investment Management Novices' Hurdle in impressive fashion and continuing on an upward curve since stepping up to open company.

Our Conor was a runaway scorer in the 2013 Triumph Hurdle and his connections are confident their charge will be peaking at just the right time after giving Hurricane Fly a tough work-out in the Irish Champion hurdle recently.

My Tent Or Yours and Jezki were both placed behind Champagne Fever in a high-class renewal of the Supreme Novices' Hurdle 12 months ago and their owner JP McManus has supplemented Captain Cee Bee to ensure a strong pace.

Jeremy Scott's stable star Melodic Rendezvous, the Paul Nicholls-trained Ptit Zig and Alan King's Grumeti complete the Champion Hurdle field.
