Champion Hurdle tips - Hurricane Fly rated best hurdler since Istabraq

Patrick Mullins has hailed Hurricane Fly as "the best hurdler since Istabraq" as he bids to land a third Stan James Champion Hurdle victory at the 2014 Cheltenham Festival.

Istabraq claimed a hat-trick of wins in this race between 1998 and 2000, becoming the fifth triple champion after Hatton's Grace, Sir Ken, Persian war and See You Then.

Hurricane Fly will join that illustrious roll of honour if beating eight rivals this term, having prevailed in 2011 when edging out Peddlers Cross and last year when seeing off Rocky On Ruby.

In fact, the son of Montjeu has only lost once in his last 17 races, when third in the 2012 Champion Hurdle, and has claimed an amazing 19 Grade One triumphs.

Trainer Willie Mullins did also have Annie Power, Un De Sceaux and Thousand Stars entered for this season's event but is happy to rely just on his 10-year-old veteran against the likes of Our Conor, The New One, My Tent Or Yours and Jezki.

When asked why the other possible contenders had been pulled out, the handler's son Patrick replied: "Hurricane Fly is better. He's the best hurdler since Istabraq, so the chances are he's the best two-mile hurdler in our yard. He's settled in well and it's all systems go."

The young pretenders are queuing up to claim Hurricane Fly's crown, led by The New One, who was impressive when scoring in the Neptune Investment Management Novices' Hurdle at last year's Festival, while Our Conor was a spectacular scorer in the Triumph hurdle.

My Tent Or Yours and Jezki were placed in the Supreme Novices' hurdle and will also have their supporters, but Mullins senior ominously warned that he feels Hurricane Fly "is stronger this year".
