2013 Cheltenham Festival Mares Hurdle runners - Quevega heads 22 possibles

Quevega, bidding to make history, heads 22 horses in the five-day declarations for the 2013 OLBG David Nicholson Mares’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival on Tuesday.

Willie Mullins’ nine-year-old is aiming to become only the second horse after Cheltenham Gold Cup legend Golden Miller in the 1930s to win a Cheltenham Festival race five times, with injury having prevented Big Buck’s from attempting the same feat.

As has become the norm, Quevega will make her seasonal debut at Cheltenham but displayed her wellbeing in a workout at Leopardstown racecourse last weekend.

There is plenty of opposition to her this time headed by Une Artiste, winner of last year’s Fred Winter Juvenile Handicap Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival and successful on both her starts this term for Nicky Henderson.

Kentford Grey Lady, trained by Emma Lavelle, chased home the Cheltenham queen 12 months ago and is set to renew rivalry along with Alasi, a winner over fences last time out who has got gradually closer to Quevega in this race over the last three years.

Tarla, a stable companion of Quevega, also features among the declarations although is thought to be a doubtful runner, with Zuzka believed more likely to be the Mullins second string.

Other potential Irish raiders are Shop Dj (Peter Fahey), Shadow Eile (Dot Love) and Mae’s Choice (Gordon Elliott).

Swing Bowler, who lost her unbeaten record behind My Tent Or Yours at Newbury on her latest start, and Henderson’s other entry Ma Filleule further consolidate the home challenge.
