Mendip Express camp now focused on National Hunt Chase

Harry Fry has ruled out going for the RSA Chase with Newbury flop Mendip Express but is still hoping to get his charge back on track for the National Hunt Chase at the Cheltenham Festival.

The eight-year-old looked a rising star following wins at Wetherby, Bangor and Prestbury Park but it is back to the drawing board for connections after he was beaten 33 lengths by Smad Place over the weekend.

"Mendip Express wasn't nearly good enough in the conditions at Newbury on Saturday," said the trainer in his latest Stan James blog. "He was firmly put in his place and, unfortunately, he had a hard race in the process and that means we face an uphill task to get him back to his very best for the Festival.

"He definitely wouldn't be entering calculations for the RSA anymore on Saturday's performance and so we'd be looking at the National Hunt Chase if we're happy that we've got him back where we want him. But it's very much an uphill task we face.

"He handled soft ground at Cheltenham but that was six weeks ago and it hasn't stopped raining since. It was very sloppy that day and very wet and loose whereas this has had six weeks more rain on it and it was just very, very testing. And now, unfortunately, plans are very much on hold."

Mendip Express remains among the market leaders for the National Hunt Chase, though, and would at least have the benefit of regular pilot Will Biddick being able to ride him in that four-mile contest for amateur jockeys.
