Trainer Neil Mulholland fancies the chances of his course specialist Midnight Chase in the JLT Specialty Handicap Chase at the Cheltenham Festival on Tuesday.

Five of the 11-year-old’s last six wins have been at Cheltenham, all of them over fences, four of them in handicap company and the most recent in the 2012 Grade 2 Argento Chase.

He has also contested the last two Cheltenham Gold Cups, finishing unplaced each time, but was second when a rank outsider in the 2009 Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle.

Midnight Chase has yet to hit form this season, being well held last time out when defending the Argento Chase, but his Wiltshire-based trainer thinks his charge is capable of running a huge race next week.

Mulholland said: “He's all ready to go. He's coming back in grade and although I'm not a betting man, I think he's a massive price.

“When you look at it, he's a bigger price for Tuesday's race than he was for the Gold Cup last year and I don't think he's any worse a horse than he was then.

“He seems in good form at home and the way he feels at the moment there’s no reason for me to think he's not as good as he's ever been.

“He hasn't had his ground so far this season, but he ran well enough in the Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby to finish third giving weight to Silviniaco Conti.

“The ground should be fine for him next week, we know he loves Cheltenham and I'm very hopeful he'll run a big race on Tuesday.”
