Swing Bowler hoping to have Quevega in a spin at Cheltenham

Quevega may be being kept under wraps ahead of her bid to claim a sixth straight OLBG Mares' Hurdle victory at this year's Cheltenham Festival but Swing Bowler and Mischievous Milly will be getting ready to take her on with warm-up outings this weekend.

Swing Bowler was only 15th of 19 when quietly fancied to give Quevega a tough test in last season's big race, finishing 37 lengths adrift, but David Pipe believes she could improve considerably on that effort if conditions are not as testing at Prestbury Park this term.

The half-sister of stablemate and fellow Festival hopeful Red Sherlock will make her seasonal return in the Betfair Hurdle at Newbury over two miles before stepping back up in distance at Cheltenham in March.

“She did not quite get the trip last year but she is stronger this year and as long as the ground is not too soft, then that should give her a better chance,” declared the Pond House Stables trainer.

Mischievous Milly is one of five runners declared to compete in the OLBG Mares' Hurdle trial at Warwick if that meeting goes ahead, with Quevega's stablemate Glens Melody and Alan King's L'Unique also due to appear here.

The first of that trio finished off her novice campaign with victories at Fakenham and Taunton last term and has made steady progress for Oliver Sherwood this season, looking a slightly unlucky second behind Glens Melody at Warwick last month.

“Mischievous Milly is going to run at Warwick on Saturday and will then go on to run in the Mares' race at Cheltenham," said the six-year-old's handler. "She handles soft/heavy ground very well and 2m4f is her ideal trip.”
