2014 Champion Chase runners - Sire De Grugy favourite for Cheltenham Festival feature

Sire De Grugy heads a list of 11 horses entered for the 2014 BetVictor Queen Mother Champion Chase in the absence of Sprinter Sacre from Wednesday's Cheltenham Festival feature.

Gary Moore's charge goes to Prestbury Park in great heart following a hat-trick of victories at Sandown, Kempton and Ascot over the winter, including Grade One successes in the Tingle Creek Chase and the Clarence House Chase.

His enthusiastic owners have been there to cheer him on every step of the way and Moore said: "It just shows people who think you can only own good horses if you are really wealthy that that's not true."

However, sceptics have suggested the market leader is not as effective going left-handed and he has been beaten by two of this week's rivals on his past visits to Cheltenham, losing out to Captain Conan in a November 2012 novice chase and being overhauled by Kid Cassidy up the hill four months ago.

Nevertheless, Charlie McCann, spokesman for sponsors BetVictor, said: “It is a fascinating renewal of the Queen Mother Champion Chase and we make Gary Moore’s stable star our favourite. Barry Geraghty has ridden the winner of the race five times previously and he will be on board Captain Conan, who is second favourite.”

Also among the front runners in the betting are a couple of Irish raiders, with Willie Mullins having always thought an awful lot of Arvika Ligeonniere and Baily Green looking to go one better than when second to Simonsig in last season's Arkle for Mouse Morris.

Henry de Bromhead sends Festival veteran Sizing Europe over from the Emerald Isle again, with the 12-year-old having followed up victory in the 2010 Arkle by landing the Champion Chase 12 months later, before finishing second to Finian's Rainbow and Sprinter Sacre in the last two renewals.

The trainer is also represented by the free-running Special Tiara, while Hinterland, Module, Somersby and Wishfull Thinking complete the line-up.
