In the absence of long-time ante post favourite Dynaste, Unioniste (3/1, Betfred) heads the betting for the RSA Chase and Paul Nicholls’ chaser has quickly proved himself as a force to be reckoned with.

His Paul Stewart Gold Cup success at Cheltenham in December came before he managed to see off Hadrian’s Approach (13/2,Paddy Power) over three miles at Newbury and he looks capable of becoming only the second five-year-old to win this race.

Many experts have been taken by the fact Ruby Walsh has opted to ride the Nicholls inmate over BOSTON BOB (7/2,William Hill), but Paul Townend partnered the Grade One winner to an unbelievable victory in the Moriarty Chase last time out and he looks in safe hands.

Willie Mullins’ eight-year-old was a top-class staying hurdler last season and was regarded as ‘banker’ material before he was turned over at last year’s Festival.  That defeat lives long in the memory and he has undoubtedly been forced to work harder than ideal to win on his two starts over fences.

That being said, both have been over trips far shorter than ideal and the latter still came at the highest level.  He could well be a much better horse over three miles and the drying ground is sure to be in his favour.  The way he stayed on in the Moriarty suggests that, like stablemate Back In Focus, he will get better and better the further they go.

He can get revenge for his Festival defeat twelve months ago, with Hadrian’s Approach most likely to be his biggest challenger.  Lyreen Legend (11/1, Betfred) also looks capable of running better than his price might suggest.

Nick Wilby’s selection – Boston Bob (7/2, William Hill)
