Sir Alex Ferguson horse I'm Fraam Govan targets 2013 Cheltenham Festival win

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson will be at the 2013 Cheltenham Festival on Wednesday when his horse I’m Fraam Govan bids for the Weatherbys Champion Bumper.

The five-year-old, trained by George Baker, features among the 35 declarations for the only official Cheltenham Festival race not run over jumps and Andrew Tinkler has already been booked to ride.

I’m Fraam Govan was an impressive winner over subsequent Listed hurdles winner and Grade One-placed Easter Day on his racecourse bow at Worcester last May.

Only fifth on his reappearance at Lingfield in January, Baker felt the all-weather track was not quite to the gelding's liking that day and retains plenty of faith in his Festival contender.

“The plan is to go to Cheltenham next week,” said the Wiltshire-based handler. “His last run was very disappointing but hopefully it was just a blip.

“They had been harrowing the track a bit deeper than they did that day for the jumpers’ bumpers meetings and the surface was just a bit too quick for him. He just didn't let himself down on the ground and I think it's best to put a line through that.

“He should be judged on his first run at Worcester. He was a hard-held winner over Easter Day on that occasion and the form has worked out well.

“The owner (Sir Alex Ferguson) is attending on Wednesday and hopefully we can put a smile on his face. It's a huge ask to win one of these championship events, but it's just lovely to be involved and hopefully he can run well.”

Inevitably, I’m Fraam Govan is by the stallion Fraam and his name also commemorates the area of Glasgow from which Sir Alex originates.
