Sire De Grugy sets up 2015 Champion Chase showdown with Sprinter Sacre

Gary Moore insisted the absence of Sprinter Sacre should not take any of the gloss off the BetVictor Queen Mother Champion Chase success of Sire De Grugy and the pair could be set for a mouth-watering showdown at the 2015 Cheltenham Festival.

With last season's runaway winner still on the easy lift following a heart scare, Sire De Grugy came with a smooth run under the trainer's son Jamie before surging clear after the last to prevail by six lengths from valiant veteran Somersby.

Despite having claimed impressive Grade One victories at Sandown and Ascot already this term, as well as winning the Desert Orchid chase at Kempton in which Sprinter Sacre was pulled up, the eight-year-old went into the Festival as one of the least fashionable favourites.

However, the ultra-consistent gelding did his talking on the track when it mattered most to take his record over fences to eight triumphs from 11 outings and earn a rightful place on the roll of honour for this race, which includes other recent stars as Moscow Flyer and Master Minded.

"It annoys me people haven't given him the credit he deserved," blasted Moore snr. "He can't do any more than what he's done. There are a lot of people who deserve a lot of credit. I'm just glad he's won for everyone as much as anything else."

Son Jamie, brother of star Flat pilot Ryan, is one of the most popular riders in the weighing room and was given a guard of honour by other jockeys when returning from the winner's enclosure.

He declared: "I've got a good rapport with this horse, I love him to pieces. It's all down to him. He's had no credit this season, as far as I'm concerned, but it's all down to the horse. I love him so much."

Somersby was followed home by Module, with another golden oldie back in fourth in Sizing Europe, the winner of this race back in 2011 and second for the last couple of years.
