Cheltenham trip in Pipe-line for Un Temps Pour Tout

Nick Wilby in Wed. 15th March 17 Feb 2014

David Pipe enjoyed mixed fortunes at Ascot on Saturday as novice hurdler Un Temps Pour Tout booked a trip to the 2014 Cheltenham Festival but Gevrey Chambertin flopped on his debut over fences.

The former cost a whopping £450,000 after impressing in top-class company in France, picking up three victories before finishing third behind Ptit Zig in a valuable Grade 1 contest at Auteuil.

Although failing to catch Zamdy Man on heavy ground at Haydock on his first outing in Britain, he built on that pleasing display to score by a wide-margin at Ascot when odds-on and is clearly held in high esteem at Pond House stables.

"I thought that expensive ex-French purchase Un Temps Pour Tout was very impressive at Ascot, landing the novices' hurdle as he pleased by 16 lengths from a useful prospect - I would think that David has him working harder on the gallops at home!" declared assistant trainer Chester Barnes on Pipe's official website.

"I know it was only a four runner race and he won as he should have done according to official figures but the step up in trip looked to be exactly what was needed and he looks as though he will get further still. All roads should certainly lead to Cheltenham from here."

An entry in the 2m 5f Neptune Investment Management Novices' Hurdle looks a sensible option for the son of Robin Des Champs, who is bred to handle better ground at next month's Festival.

Pipe also had winners at Haydock and Wincanton on Saturday but suffered a setback when the much-vaunted Gevrey Chambertin was pulled up in the Reynoldstown Novices' Chase at Ascot.

Tom Scudamore had the well-backed favourite, four times a winner over hurdles, in the firing line for much of that contest but he faded badly when passed approaching the penultimate fence and plans to have a crack at the RSA Chase will now surely be shelved.
