Dynaste to be aimed at Ryanair Chase reports David Pipe

David Pipe has revealed that he is favouring a tilt at the Ryanair Chase with Dynaste as the countdown to the 2014 Cheltenham Festival continues.

The eight-year-old was second to Benefficient in last season's Jewson Novices' Chase over 2m 4f when a well-backed favourite, before recouping some of those losses with a six-length success in Grade Two company at Aintree.

The popular grey gelding began this term in promising fashion when runner-up to Cue Card in the Betfair Chase at Haydock, with Silviniaco Conti back in third and Bobs Worth well beaten.

However, Dynaste was tailed off when starting joint-favourite for the King George at Kempton on Boxing Day and connections are now leaning towards a drop back in distance at the Festival.

Adding to the attraction of the Ryanair Chase is the fact that several camps torn between that contest and the Queen Mother Champion chase could now switch to the shorter event following the withdrawal of Sprinter Sacre.

Pipe said on his personal website: "I was very sorry to hear that Sprinter Sacre will not be taking his chance in the Queen Mother Champion Chase. The Festival is all about the best horses taking each other on and for him to be absent is a great blow for Racegoers.

"Racing needs its equine stars and his performance in last year’s renewal marked him as one of the very brightest. Hopefully he will return next season as good as ever.

"It has however opened the race right up for his rivals and with many potential Ryanair participants now more likely to take their chance in the Champion Chase and Cue Card likely to run in the Gold Cup, we are leaning towards the Ryanair Chase with Dynaste.

"Our Grade One winning grey gelding has responded well to his treatment from Mary Bromiley and is on course to return at the Festival next month. He will be left in the Gold Cup until the last moment as a precaution although we are now favouring the shorter race."

Dynaste gained his Grade One success in the 2012 Kauto Star Feltham Novices' Chase at Kempton over 3m but also has some smart form over shorter trips, both over hurdles and fences.
