The 2014 Cheltenham Festival will have an extra Grade 1 race after the Jewson Novices’ Chase was upgraded to the top-level status.

Formerly a Grade 2 contest, the Jewson is among four races that have been elevated along with two at the Aintree Grand National meeting and one at Sandown Park.

The Aintree races that have become Grade 1s are the three-mile Mildmay Novices’ Chase and the two-and-a-half mile Mersey Novices’ Hurdle, while the Celebration Chase at Sandown Park on the last day of the season has also been upgraded.

Ruth Quinn, director of racing at the BHA, said:
“This enhancement will provide further recognition of the quality of races on offer at the season's flagship events at Cheltenham and Aintree, as well as providing a further boost to the final day of the jumps season at Sandown Park.”

Since its inauguration in 2011, the Jewson Novices’ Chase has attracted a progressively stronger field and this year it was chosen by connections of top-class prospect Dynaste in preference to the much longer established RSA Chase.

Dynaste finished second to 20/1 Irish-trained outsider Benefficient before going on to win the Mildmay Novices’ Chase at Aintree.

Other boosts for Cheltenham races that have been announced by the British Horseracing Authority are new Listed status for both the four-mile John Oaksey National Hunt Chase at the Festival and the two-mile Shloer Chase in November.

2014 Jewson Novices’ Chase ante-post odds (Bet365):

10/1 Oscar Whisky
12/1 Champagne Fever
14/1 Rock On Ruby
16/1 Un Atout
20/1 bar
