Argocat has a 'live chance' at 2013 Cheltenham Festival, says Tom Taaffe

Irish trainer Tom Taaffe feels his Jewson Novices’ Chase raider Argocat has a “live chance” at the Cheltenham Festival on March 14.

The five-year-old has won twice from four starts over fences this term and was last seen running away with a Grade Two prize at Limerick on Boxing Day.

Argocat has since been kept off the track to ensure he would head to Cheltenham fresh and in top form.

Taaffe said: “I think Argocat is our main one for Cheltenham. We are looking at the Jewson for him. I think he has a live chance, I wouldn't send him over otherwise.

“He did what we expected him to do at Christmas and it was always the plan to wait with him until Cheltenham after that. I've been waiting for a bit of better ground for him.”

The son of Montjeu is owned by Mrs Fitri Hay and was formerly trained for her on the Flat by Paul Cole.

After a disappointing first effort over fences this season at Ballinrobe, he has won twice at Limerick with his Boxing Day success coming by eight lengths on heavy ground.

In between those victories he finished runner-up to Twinlight in a Grade 3 contest at Galway, beaten two lengths.

“His jumping has been very good so far and when he's doing everything the right way like that, you just hope he can keep on doing it,” added Taaffe.

Argocat ran at the Cheltenham Festival last year in the Fred Winter Juveniles’ Handicap Hurdle, running respectably before fading to finish ninth of 24 behind Une Artiste having won on his previous start at Thurles.

That was his final race over timber before his chasing career began in September when still a four-year-old.
