Gary Moore targeting Byrne Group Plate at Cheltenham Festival with Vino Griego

Trainer Gary Moore is preparing his progressive novice chaser Vino Griego for the Byrne Group Plate at the 2013 Cheltenham Festival.

It means another step into open company for the eight-year-old, who finally came good at the 18th attempt over fences in a novices’ handicap on Cheltenham Trials Day at the end of January.

But Vino Griego has shown he can beat more senior and established rivals by winning a three-mile Ascot contest on his latest start from Grand National fourth Cappa Bleu.

Vino Griego was raised 7lbs by the handicapper for that success, ruling out the Pulteney Land Investments Novices’ Handicap Chase option.

“He goes for the Byrne Group Plate and seems to be taking his racing well,” said Moore, who has won the race before with Tikram.

“I’d rather have gone for the novices’ handicap chase at Cheltenham but he won at Ascot a week too soon really.

“The handicapper put us up 7lbs so that ruled out the novice, but he's got plenty of confidence and is a horse on the up. Soft ground at Cheltenham would be a help though.”

Moore will therefore be hoping the forecast for the dry spell to end with a wetter few days next week proves accurate.

The Sussex-based handler also had further news of Fruity O’Rooney, who will bid to go one better than last year’s second place in the JLT Specialty Handicap Chase.

“I think he's every bit as good as he was last year and the JLT is the plan off a nice mark, 1lb lower than last year,” said Moore.
