After a bumper day for the Irish as they provided five of the seven winners on Tuesday, another of the big championship prizes could be heading across the water on day three of this magical meeting.

Paul Nicholls will go into the World Hurdle hoping he has a successor to Big Buck’s, who won the premier staying event for timber-toppers four times in a row from 2009-12, as he saddles the likely first and second favourites Zarkandar and Saphir Du Rheu (both 5/1 with 888sport).

However, there are sound reasons for taking on the duo, particularly Zarkandar for he has been around a good while now – won the Triumph Hurdle in 2011 – and could be vulnerable against a host of rapidly improving younger hurdlers.

They include his stable companion Saphir Du Rheu, who won the key trial for this event, the Cleeve Hurdle, in January but may need the ground a touch softer as most of his wins have come on testing going.

Three horses will race in the famous maroon colours of the Gigginstown House Stud and while Brian Cooper’s mount Lieutenant Colonel holds solid claims it’s Dedigout, on whom Denis O’Regan will wear a distinguishing white cap, that appeals from an each-way perspective.

The fact that Tony Martin’s runner is now a nine-year-old does not deter because Inglis Drever, Big Buck’s and Solwhit were all of the same vintage when they won this race.

And Dedigout, lightly raced for his age anyway, is in the form of his life just now having won back-to-back Grade 2 events at Gowran Park and Navan, showing plenty of stamina to do so.

He is racing outside Ireland for the first time so his liking for Cheltenham has to be taken on trust, but at 25/1 with 888sport he makes definite each-way appeal having previously shown he does not need the ground bottomless to be fully effective.

Of the remainder, Nicky Henderson-trained Whisper is another credible each-way alternative (11/1 with Ladbrokes) to the Nicholls duo whom it looks well worth taking on.
