Coneygree made virtually every yard of the running to become the first novice to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup since Captain Christy in 1974.

Under jockey Nico de Boinville, who was having his first ride in steeplechasing’s blue riband event, Coneygree set off at a strong pace in rain-softened ground, and running down the hill only four of his 15 rivals were still in with a chance of winning.

They included Irish raiders Djakadam and Road To Riches, who were the only pair to mount serious challenges in the home straight, but neither of them could quite get on terms with Mark Bradstock’s eight-year-old.

Having only his fourth start over fences, all of which he has won, 7/1 shot Coneygree kept going strongly despite edging right on the run-in to hold on by a length and a half from Djakadam with Road To Riches a further two lengths away in third.

Of the remainder, Holywell was another six lengths back in fourth, while favourite Silviniaco Conti weakened running down the hill to finish seventh and former Gold Cup victors Bobs Worth and Lord Windermere were pulled up after never getting into contention.

Bred by the late racing TV presenter Lord Oaksey and trained by his son-in-law Mark Bradstock, Coneygree was having only his 10th ever race due to injury problems and has been beaten only twice.

The decision to bypass Wednesday’s RSA Chase and go for gold was completely vindicated as he achieved a feat no novice has been able to accomplish for 41 years, relishing the testing ground.

Winning jockey De Boinville said:
“It's the best feeling ever. It was a great plan to go for the Gold Cup. The weather gods were looking down on us and the ground was ideal.
“He's deceptive, even when he gets in tight to fences he's brilliant. It's all thanks to the Bradstock family, it's a great family effort. I must thank the owners and the Bradstocks for keeping faith in me. These horses only come once in a lifetime.”
