The Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup (3:20pm) is a Class A Grade 1 chase run over three miles and about two and a half furlongs. It is open to horses aged five years old and upwards. The total prize fund for 2011 was £500,000.

If the Cheltenham Festival is the most prestigious event in the National Hunt calendar, then the Gold Cup has to be the most prestigious race. Whilst it used to be considered little more than a trial for the Grand National the importance of the Festival has grown. It is now the event that everyone wants to win as the Gold Cup crowns the best chaser in Europe over a relentless three mile course.

Won by some of the best horses of all time, victory in the race demands the perfect balance between speed, technique and bravery and it is no surprise that Kauto Star and Long Run are set to battle out the race in this year's golden race.

Having won the race in 2007, Kauto Star lost his crown to his Paul Nicholls stablemate Denman in 2008, before the result was reversed once again in 2009. In 201 Imperial Commander took the crown, while Denman used the hype around Kauto Star v Denman in 2011 to put his name on the prestigious winner's list.
