4.40 Fred Winter

French imports are always worth watching out for in the Fred Winter Juvenile Novices' Handicap Hurdle, a contest which was introduced in 2005 and honours one of the true greats of National Hunt racing, who won 17 Cheltenham Festival races as a jockey, plus 28 as a trainer.

Conceived as an opportunity for four-year-old hurdlers deemed not quite good enough to contest the Triumph, it has been a good event for Gallic recruits, with Shamayoun, Gaspara, Sanctuaire and Une Artiste being brought across the Channel to be groomed for success.

No trainer or jockey has come out on top more than once, though, with Flaxen Flare springing a 25/1 surprise for Gordon Elliott and Davy Condon last term and leading home other unfancied placed horses at 20/1, 22/1 and 16/1.

However, favourite backers had fared pretty well previously in this 2m 110yds contest, which features eight hurdles, and Nicky Henderson's Dawalan would appear to tick all the right boxes this time.
